So readers to our last match report of 2023 season, for the game versus the ever so lovely Gents of West London at a new pitch for me – Dundonald Rec in Wimbledon. 10 players arrived in whites including debutant Hassan and with yours truly hoping to sit it out but I was soon roped into the match – which was fair enough as I cocked up the selection.  Due to likely thunderstorms it was quickly decided that a 20/20 contest would be best and captain Raj won the toss and elected to field first on what was a very dark afternoon.

It’s worth mentioning that ex captain Yov (now of Aston Rowant Retirement Home for ex-Salix Captains) decided to play a game with us and we were very pleased to have him as he donned keepers kit for the first ten overs. Salix bowled well and got a few quick wickets, as usual some of the fielding was a bit iffy bar of course the ever reliable CK who took a great catch, on his second attempt, right on the boundary edge.  Dills took over keeping duties for the second ten after a short rain break and added a catch off Raj’s bowling to go with his two wickets from his earlier spell…

With the rain coming down very heavily again the Gents posed 165 with one of their players getting a 50.

Time for a quick tea or Brew Dog and another rain shower before our time to bat, on what was now, a very soggy pitch. Salix openers Yov and Raj got going quickly but once Raj was out after a cheeky 19, Daveski entered the fray and both he and Yov managed to secure a 100 partnership, which ended with Yov carrying his bat for 114 to help Salix to a win in what has been a pretty good season with some close games.

After all our athletic efforts a good hour or two was spent at the pub discussing the highs and lows of life and then on to Colliers Wood finest, but possibly slowest, Sri Lankan restaurant.

Roll on 2024!
