Report for 22nd August Captain’s Day by The Nurdler

Captain’s Day brought together 18 Salixites to play a 2 inning 20 over match at the picturesque Chiswick House ground. Captain’s for the day were Ali (for the Ali Gators) and Rory (for Rory’s Reprobates).

Ali’s team batted first and it seemed high scoring might be the order of the day with four players (Daveski, Padders, Dom, Raj) reaching 25 and retiring undefeated and a score of 158 for 2 posted. The only wicket to fall was a family affair with Will caught off his Dad’s bowling.

The Reprobates replied with 159 all out in a rollercoaster innings that featured 61 from Yov in three slices and 36 from CK (including 25 from8 balls). For the Fielding side, Daveski was the destroyer with 3 for 12 off his 13 balls, direct-hit runouts from the Three-Eyed Raven and Padders and a truly spectacular catch from Dozy diving high to his right. We should also mention Raj’s bowling stint, wincing in with a sore shoulder only to have Yov dropped twice off successive balls and then go for 55 off his three overs.

So at halfway there was one run in it. The second innings started much less well for Ali’s boys as a succession of wickets fell to fine bowling from Yov, Afzar and CK in particular. The final total of 118 was only reached as a result of fine batting again from Ali with 39 undefeated runs (making a total of 61 runs for once out on the day) and support from Padders and Will.

The Reprobates seemed destined to ease to victory as, despite losing Tuffers early, they reached 63 for 1 in the 8th over. Rory was prominent, retiring on 29 and Irwin offered good support. At this point, Padders, Daveski and Sai (in spinner mode) produced some good bowling. 4 wickets fell in short order with Dave holding 2 good catches to send back CK and Yov, and with Charles hors de combat after a blow to the shin, suddenly there were only two wickets remaining and 16 needed. Afzar and Robert played calmly though and, despite the best efforts of the bowling, got home with 4.3 overs to spare.

Victory for the Reprobates then but a close and keenly contested match enjoyed by all. Thanks to Steve-O for scoring – a very neat book and the Electronic Board up to date at all times.
