2. FOOTBALL offers the world clichés; RUGBY produces facial deformity; HOCKEY provides an acceptable outlet for psychotic violence; CRICKET alone breeds myths... More quotes here.

It was, of course, a dull and blustery day as the Salix 11 shook of the slough of winter, dragged their aged jockstraps from their bags and pulled on their whites.

We fielded first and it was all going quite well till Fletch got the Lurpak league going by dropping Smith in the slips when he was on 10, before he went onto the 60 odd. But we soldiered on. Sadly the team got their own back on me by dropping two off my bowling in an over. Oh well.

Stevie, looking ever like the Flying Scotsman (the locomotive, not a jock with wings) bowled exceptionally well to get 4 for 13, and yours truly got a few too. Chris K clean bowled one of the MW's with a cracker. But even though the outfield was a little slow they still got 147 in 35 overs. A tough target.

Over to the pavilion for tea (a new and rather expensive development) and it was Clarkster and Matt leading us off. And it went rather slowly, and they were out a touch softly, then Alex came in and started whacking and it all looked a bit better.

And then Capn Ben and Old (New) Dominic squared up, broke his bat, and it was going very well, seeing us to 116 for 4. Then one of our umpires who shall be nameless but is very tall and rides a bike gave Capn Ben out LBW and then it all went tits up with Tom, Kev and Mike all falling in 3 overs. Fletch and Chris K stiffened up the tail, but Fletch was a little too old to run 2 without stopping for a rest and it was pretty much hasta la vista Salix.

A regular start and a regular defeat. But great opponents and a really nice day.
