2. FOOTBALL offers the world clichés; RUGBY produces facial deformity; HOCKEY provides an acceptable outlet for psychotic violence; CRICKET alone breeds myths... More quotes here.

Capn Ben presents Steve-O with trophy for the first 100 wick
The first home game of the season got off to a good start, with Ben in a surprise winning the toss shocker. It went downhill from there. Having witnessed my glorious innings of 1 when opening in the Slovenia tour, Ben kept his faith in me and was rewarded by my getting out to a similar score again - cleaned bowled by a clever full toss. And I wasn't the only one demonstrating batting from the Benny Hill school of cricket; Andy Rayner followed me back shortly afterwards, having hit a beautiful four and then swiped at a dead straight one that cleaned bowled him the very next ball. Capn Ben was out to a gem of a one handed diving slip catch and Dominic was caught at point. So far so bad. New boys Matt and Warrick shored up the middle order for a short while, but when the latter was out plum leg before, the writing was on the wall - although Fletch showed the younger crew a thing or two later on, hitting a useful 25.

Salix lore knows that you have to hit at least 180 to 200 to be competitive at Glaxo and 115 is obviously nowhere near that. Despite some tight bowling by Steve and sharp bowling by CK1, we didn't get the early wickets we needed to give ourselves any chance of getting a win. Our bowling wasn't bad, we just didn't have any luck, dropped a few catches and probably didn't pressure the opposition as much as we should have done. Stanmore rattled off the runs fairly quickly and despite a couple of late wickets from Tony, they never looked in any danger of losing. The only highlight of our time in the field was a splendid diving catch taken by Dominic, yes Dominic, at short third man.

Here's hoping the batting improves a bit in June.
