So, a thunderstorm on the way to the ground. An omen perhaps? Or not.

The Salix team having been ravaged by injury and by Euro 2004 we were a touch depleted but very pleased to welcome a couple of new players, Henry and Davy. And sadly The German and the Quicksilva were held up on route, meaning we started fielding with just 7. The Phene kindly lent us a couple and yours truly was honoured with the new ball to start bowling.

The very first time in my career I have used a hard red shiny thing rather than a mouldy old ragged pink lump that?s been bashed against the wall numerous times. So Mr Ellis and I made a reasonable fist of it, especially as last year Ginger had entered the ?It?s a shocker? listing with his bowling against the Phene.

Well, he made up for it this year with a sublime spell. And truthfully, it was looking good up till about 25 overs with the Phene on the back foot. However, their 7 and 8 came in and leathered seven bells out of the once hard shiny round red thing, putting on a ton in just 15 overs to see the Phene to 220 at close.

Tea taken, we resumed in the pleasant evening sunlight to see Messrs Daveski and Ginger make the same noise as Anas Platyrhynchos does when you poke a stick up its backside and it was thence a rather long slog on the back foot. We were always a touch behind the run rate, and simply ran out of wickets towards the end.

Anyhow, the game?s the thing and a good time was had by all. And so the boys of Salix continue to search for their first win of the season.
