With no wins recorded since June, the match vs The Gents gave the Salix boys a final chance to salvage something from a dismal second half of the season. A chance which we seized with ?well if not exactly both hands, then at least we clung on to it after a couple of heart-stopping juggles.

Uniquely for Salix, an advertised 1.00 pm start became an actual 1.00 pm start and Cap?n The Germans first act as our new leader was lead his side out into the field. (Your reporter failed to note who won the toss, having turned up at 12.55 expecting the standard late start.) (Eds Note: The Direktor, who is marginally more on the ball than the Nurdler these days, noted that Captain the German won the toss but elected to field, despite me getting him in a headlock and berating him re WG Grace in the dressing room) Anyway, in the field with a damp pitch under overcast skies, Salix delivered one of their better bowling performances with Ginger Mark II providing most of the highlights with a return of 4 for 12 from his 7 overs and a cracking catch. The German pitched in with 3 good catches, Mr Magoo nipped in at the end with 2 for 3 and safety pin manufacturers? share prices plummeted when Herr Direktor?s new trousers held up under the strain of 27.1 overs of sprightly keeping.

All out 93. No contest then. Oh no, batting on straight away, we contrived to be 2 for 2 after 7 balls and rallied only slightly to 30 for 3 at tea. Thereafter, the German provided a steady presence and made an undefeated 33 as despite regular wicket loss, we inched home with three wickets to spare against some determined bowling and fielding. Man of the Match ? Ginger for the aforementioned bowling performance. Run Out of the week ? following my participation in an X-Rated display last week, this week?s nomination has to go to The German for calling a run that left CK1 short by half the length of the pitch. Stat of the week 50% win rate for the regular season, equalling our best of the millennium (2003, since you ask).

There you go, one match report and no nasty comments about Elvis. Thanks to The Gents for being sporting opposition. Have a nice autumn, next stop the Christmas Net + Thai.
