Ain't nothing but a hattrick, just bowling all the time
For the second week running, Salix managed to eek out a win in fairly tight circumstances. Not having played last week's match, I can't comment on the reasons for our victory; but this week was definitely down to that rare Salix beast, teamwork. Our fielding, notably our catching, was top draw; we batted sensibly and our heads never went down even when the match seemed to be crawling away from us. In no small part this is down to the German's increasing confidence as Captain, manifesting itself yesterday in firstly winning the toss and ensuring we weren't in the field during one of the hottest afternoons of the year and secondly with proactive field placing and bowling changes that kept the game tight. The German's also fairly useful with the bat at the moment; building on a solid opening partnership between Dom and Bison, he and Ex Capn Ben shared a 3rd wicket stand that accounted for most of the inning's runs. Ben went on to score his 4th fifty for the club, shortly after the German had been dismissed, caught behind off a ball their skipper told me a was "a peach".

Thereafter firstly CK1 and then Ginge added some valuable extra runs to accelerate the score, the latter playing a particular sweet straight drive for four off Strongroom's fastest bowler. The German felt that a total score of 176 was about 25 runs shy of a defendable total on a mid Summer Glaxo wicket, but for once we'd played with patience against a team that rarely bowled inaccurately and who fielded sharply.

Our first couple of overs in the field were fairly inauspicious; an almost certain run out was fumbled and our bowling seemed to lack any penetration. After 4 overs it all changed; Ginge took first one wicket, a smartly taken catch behind from Ben standing close up, then a second off his own bowling, before Charlie snaffled a third at point. During a rather mediocre spell I had their skipper caught and bowled, but their number 3 was looking increasingly dangerous and was beginning to hit boundaries with apparent ease. The German, however, had kept CK1 up his sleeve and when he came on to stifle the runs, Strongroom were forced to play more aggressively so that Tony's introduction into the attack ensured that it would only be a matter of time before their form player skied one to the boundary; the German took a splendid catch diving forward at long off, rounding out a good day in the field for him as he'd earlier run out one of their top order with a direct hit on the stumps.

With Strongroom only having nine players able to bat, it was soon all over and Salix had won twice on the run for the first time this season. Thanks to Strongroom, who played competitively throughout. Men of the match to Ex Capn Ben for a fine innings after a few matches away and to the German for a fine display both with the bat and in the field.
