2. FOOTBALL offers the world clichés; RUGBY produces facial deformity; HOCKEY provides an acceptable outlet for psychotic violence; CRICKET alone breeds myths... More quotes here.

The Lads
We've been coming to Islip for more than a quarter of my adult life. It's quite an event for me, as I look forward to seeing Frank, Rick, Brian and all the others, slightly older each year perhaps, but no less enthusiastic, plus the teams have all grown their own players over time. No less than 2 father son combos on display today, a 12 year old wicket keeper doing an excellent job for Islip and for us, Seed-O bowling his first overs for Salix. And very well he did too. There's a picture of the lad in nappies at this very ground in the late 90's. It won't be long before it?s a picture of me in my adult diapers I suspect. But I digress.

Batting first, Islip accumulated slowly on a rather up and down pitch, but accumulate they did and aided by a spectacularly inept bowling spell by yours truly ended up at 148 for 3 at tea. Salix were tight in the field.

However cometh the tea, cometh the sluggish batting and whilst virtually everyone got in, no one really got on and apart from a valiant last ditch attempt by Paul to win it all on his own, we fell short. But in truth it was a fun game and played in the spirit that these games always are: lots of friendly chat and the sun even shone for a bit. You couldn't ask for a nicer day out in the country than a trip to Islip.

PS I note SteveO is earing the same woolly from 97 that he wears now and I have it on good authority it has never seen the inside of a Zanussi...

Dear all: age has robbed me of my ability to bowl, but it has not robbed me of my ability to feel thoroughly depressed about it all. I shall either have to get a fifty next week or start Googling a reputable supplier of monkey glands with added Prozac to take with my Sanatogen next week. Please don't be nice to me about it all, I might have a breakdown.
