Rapt
On a pitch resembling the Wandsworth pitch from a few weeks ago, Padders won the toss and inserted the Swans, would it be another low scoring game like a few weeks ago?

The first few overs would suggest so, with Delilah and Rog keeping things tight. Their opening pair were solid and batted through the new ball. MGF came on and bowled a brilliant spell, and deserved more than the one wicket he took as he passed the bat more times than I can remember. With the pressure building from the other end, the batsmen tried to up the tempo against me with several swings and misses. Finally though, the breakthrough had come with Rog taking a good catch at midwicket off my bowling.

The wicket brought the Swans best batsman to the crease, Salmon, and quickly had the scoreboard ticking along (with some help off the usual Salix fielding). At one point we thought we had finally got him, with Deepak taking a good catch but unfortunately Deepak had crossed the boundary line, so it turned out to be 6 valuable runs.

Padders and CK bowled well at the death and took key wickets each, CK getting the dangerous Salmon in the 34 over, which probably saved valuable runs in the final over – something that would be crucial later in the game. The Swans score of 171 was very competitive and would need a good batting performance to get us close.

Dozy had kept well on a difficult pitch with indifferent bounce, and then opened the batting with Daveski; and like the Swans opening pair kept the score ticking along without giving away many chances. Daveski hitting their fast bowler over his head for 4 was a highlight. Shortly after though Daveski was bowled with one that kept low and came in.

Padders joined Dozy and actually accelerated past Dozy within a few overs. At drinks we had only lost one wicket, but the run-rate was behind the asking rate. Padders was bowled trying to accelerate the scoring, bringing CK to crease. Dozy was then run out, and in a change of batting order MGF joined CK and within a few overs the asking rate was brought down from “Unlikely” to “Possible”. It was 50-50 with 5 overs to go; 35 needed.

MGF holed out in the deep, and Mark Jolly followed soon back in the pavilion. It was going to need CK and Rog to get us home. Needing 17 to win off the last 2 overs and then 10 off the last 1; it was going to be another nail biter like many a Salix game this season. 2 off the first ball, 4 off the second; four needed from 4, was soon 3 from 3. Rog now on strike; gets a steepler which goes through the keeper. 3 from 2. Then Rog, cool as a cucumber slashed the next ball for four. Not quite a last ball thrilla but as good as.

All in all a great game, played in a great spirit.

Also, how great it was to be playing the White Swans again. One of our very best oppos in my book. Keep it going, Dave!

For posterity, I think we should mention two great cricket shots that stood out even in CK's run of form. The straight-ish six was a beauty and the square cut for four off the first ball of the last over finally got us in pole position - to be finished off by Rog's slightly less aesthetic but no less effective "late cut" four.

Was on the match report originally, but got axed as I wrote it badly, well done to KP as this match was his first Salix win (that wasn't a tour game), thus breaking his anti-Bresnan curse. (England has only lost one Test match Bresnan has played in. This includes wins in the first 13 Test matches Bresnan played in)

"with some help off the usual Salix fielding" = equates to SEVEN dropped catches. Welcome to the new normal, even without Arsey and Pretty Boy
