2. FOOTBALL offers the world clichés; RUGBY produces facial deformity; HOCKEY provides an acceptable outlet for psychotic violence; CRICKET alone breeds myths... More quotes here.

A look at our recent record against the Gents would not have given much grounds for optimism on a balmy September afternoon, and indeed we once again fell to a heavy defeat. The good news started and ended early with Badmo winning the toss, and an early breakthrough from a run-out following good work by Siv and ex-Capn Ben. 20 overs later we finally got another wicket when Rog took a smart caught and bowled, Gents having had plenty of luck on the way with a number of shots falling annoyingly between fielders. We rallied a bit, Tuffers taking four and nearly completing a five-fer when another ball dropped between fielders, but then a late whack-fest took Gents to a score that we would have to bat well to beat.

Dom kindly added to tea with some Farmers Market pork pie before the inevitable. Arsey was out in the second over, though thereafter Siv and stand-in opener Rog put together a good stand, the latter only out to a controversial LBW, given by his bessie mate Arsey..... But the run rate started to slow and the wickets started to fall, as Gents made a series of tricky catches look easy, in particular a stunning backward diving catch on the boundary to dismiss Badmo. On so to the pub, where talks turned to next year’s tour, with Smutmeister in the organisers chair, and Italy being seriously considered. And we left the pub to the as ever unfailingly nice Gents applauding us. Next year we’ll give them a game surely…
