Catches win matches goes the old saying, and this looked pretty true today.
Winning the toss, Vice Cap'n Clarkster put Islip into bat and on a soggy wicket they took some time to pick up speed.  Once again our fielding let us down with wicket keeper Dominic S dropping two (better than the three he dropped in the game last year, it has to be said ) and Dom G and the Clarkster hisself also dropping catches.    These were to prove crcuial with the Islip big scorer getting dropped twcie on his way to 68

Virtually everyone in the Salix side could bowl with some level  of competence and so a wide variety of bowling was even with Mr J particularly good on 10 overs , 4 wickets for 25 runs and Fletch and Dom getting some each too.

At tea, Islip were 146 off the 40 overs, the sun had come out and it all looked vaguely possible.

Openers Dom S and Matt pretty much kept up with  run rate at first but as the wicket dried out the runs got less and less until by around halfway we were a bit below target, they started hitting out (good per from Matt - big scoroer in the making here, no doubt!!) .  This was our cue for a comedy collapse as one after another Paul, Dave came in and went straight out again getting lower and lower scores culminating in yours truly being out for a pathetic C and B for a duck.   Clarkster stopped the rot then this was the  cue for a heroic fight back.  Alex and Andy started whacking the Islip bowlers around and with 4 overs to go, we only needed 6 to win.  Then Alex played over a straight one to get clean bowled, in came Dominic who spooned his first ball straight to a fielder (*) for a golden and then Steve, who played and blocked two before succumbing.

Once again a lovely day with excellent hosts and a new pavilion, it's just a shame we can't win one.  A number of the team suggested after that  we change our name from Salix CC and reinvent ourselves as a new  team with no past.
Please send any suggestions to the Director of Cricket, who henceforth will be known as Gloria.

(*) in marked contrast to last week when Andy and Dom shared a  90-odd stand.
